Abstract: The article presents an interview with W. W. Gaston, vice president of Gold Kist Inc. When asked about the difference of Gold Kist, one of the five largest agricultural cooperatives in the U.S., from any other very large business, he opines that cooperatives are working for their owners, and the owners are the farmers of America. Gaston believes that processing has been more profitable for Gold Kist than growing food. He asserts that Gold Kist is not organized just for small farmers, but for all types and sizes of farmers and relates that the cooperative's future role domestically would be one of continual, gradual expansion of services and facilities for their members.
