Motivation of Food Cooperative Members: Reply to Curhan and Wertheim

    Abstract: On the basis of their studies of 35 food-buying co-ops in the greater Boston area, Curhan and Wertheim concluded that the major source of motivation for co-op members is involvement in primary group relationships. This conclusion is at variance with other studies of food co-ops that show price savings to be the primary motivator. Data from a current survey at small and large food co-ops in the western United States also underscore the importance of economic motivation among co-op members.
